For a long time, I just sat there on the curb. I sat until the dew condensed under me and my seat grew wet. Then, the sunlight went away as huge clouds rolled over the sky swallowing up every last golden ray. My fingers turned numb, but I didnât feel the cold. I didnât know exactly what to do. I knew that I should get up, go back to the hotel, and tell my friends what happened, but how could I move with a broken heart? It felt like if I made the slightest movement, then I would break into a million pieces.
For a long time, I didnât cry. What happened was too shocking, too real. Then, one lone thought blew across my mind like a tumbleweed in the wind. Tree branches shook as the wind picked up and howled across the land.
I messed up.
Thatâs when the tears started. Big, fat tears rolled down my cheeks. Then the rain came, and still, I didnât move. Guilt didnât just prod me, it clawed at me, it tore me up. How could I have done something so foolish? How could I have betrayed Chase like that? And why on Gaiaâs good, green Earth did we hurt the ones we loved?
I wanted to curl up and let the Earth swallow me.
I donât deserve to win the Trials. I should just drop out now.
My thoughts came as rapidly as the rain now falling from the sky. Why should I go on competing when my world was falling apart? Who was I to be a leader of a coven when I couldnât even be a leader of my own life?
I might have let the rain fall on me all night but for the lightning that slashed the sky. I was fine with being the melodramatic heroine crying herself silly in the rain like some country singer in a music video, but did I want to be fried to a golden crisp from a lightning strike?
No, thank you.
I picked myself up, brushed the dirt off my knees, and made my way back to the hotel where the warm lights of the entrance spilled into the street and beckoned me inside. When I entered, the rich smell of Cajun food greeted me, but I wasnât hungry. I dripped all over the oriental rug in the foyer and shivered from the cold. I couldnât bring myself to go up to the room just yet. I knew that once I got there, I would have to explain to my friends what had happened. Then it would be real.
Then it would truly hit me that Chase and I had broken up.
âGoodness! Are you all right?â
Tony came strutting toward me, his tie swinging from his neck. âYou look worse than a water rat. What happened?â
âMy boyfriend broke up with me.â I shivered. Now that I was somewhere warm, my body finally registered that standing out in the rain in fifty degree weather was not a good idea.
âOh honey, Iâm so sorry,â he said.
